What is an eTA? (Electronic Travel Authorization)
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a mandatory digital entry requirement for most visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through Canada. It’s a simple online pre-approval that’s electronically linked to your passport, no sticker or separate document needed.
Once approved, it allows multiple short visits to Canada (typically up to 6 months per stay), and it’s valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It helps speed up travel for millions of visitors while keeping borders safe.
Who Needs an eTA?
You need a valid eTA (or a visitor visa) if you’re flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport and you’re a citizen of a visa-exempt country. - No eTA required if entering Canada by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships) — even if you’re from a visa-exempt country.

- Citizens of visa-required countries generally need a visitor visa instead (though some may qualify for an eTA under specific programs).
